Why Vocalists Should Learn To Read Music

I had a vocal student recently ask why they needed to learn to read music so I figured it would be a great topic to write about this week ?

– You can learn a song faster!! Youll be able to see the rise and fall of notes, how long to hold them, where to breath, how loud or soft to sing, which sections are repeated etc.

– Memorization is easier! You don’t have to memorize only the sounds of the notes but you’ll be able to see them too! A great visual component to help with the memorization process.

– Communication with other instrumentalists will be easier! If you have to work with an accompanist you’ll be able to explain all the musical logistics with the correct terminology.

– You can learn music on your own! Most vocalists that don’t read music rely on someone else to teach them the song or recordings. It will make you independent.

– It will expand your repertoire! By being able to learn music on your own you can explore different styles much easier! It will open up a whole world of music to you!
