The Working Musician

The world is full of music. It is wonderful. And the reason it is full of music is because there are people who have music in their hearts with such a passion that they devote much of their time and energy into a particular craft that they have honed to contribute to the music of the world.

There are musicians everywhere, many of which go unnoticed, and many who have household names. From symphonies to subways, street corners to chapels, restaurants to rock concerts, musicians can be seen and heard all around us.

But it is not only the musicians who help fill the void of silence. There are teachers in schools, universities, at home and in your home on Zoom. There are sound techs, engineers, producers, stage hands, road managers, luthiers, instrument cleaners, record reps, djs, radio station programmers, film composers, music editors, arrangers, orchestrators, conductors, and the list goes on and on and on and on.

If we think about these people and recognize them in our daily lives we can have a greater appreciation for them and the reason they do what they do. They have been given a passion that propels them to carry on the music of the centuries. They love what they do and have been blessed to be able to do it. We can applaud the people of the world who have remained devoted to their passion.

I was inspired to write this article as I sat at a sound board at a wedding listening to the pianist and her beautiful solo voice. What a wonderful talent and skill she has to share with those who listen. I greatly appreciate her passion for music and the way she blends skill and artistic expression to convey her passion to the world.
