How to Improve Sight Reading

1. Scan music for tricky sections. Identify the measures with harder rhythm patterns and notes.

2. Read ahead and use knowledge of intervals and repetitive patterns to help you navigate your way through..

3. Know your key signature and make note of the sharps and flats that occur in the song.

4. Look at time signature and make sure you understand how to count the song or passage you are attempting to sight read.

5. Pick a slow enough tempo that you will succeed at! Don’t start too fast. Work your way up to being able to play fast.

6.Don’t pick music or snippets that are too difficult for you. The point is to get better at sight reading! So choose music that is a level or two easier then you would choose to perform or work on for a long term project.
