What Type of Piano to Buy as a Beginner

Finding the right instrument to start learning the piano can be a bit overwhelming. There are a gazillion brands and models as options, and narrowing down the best choice can seem like a huge task. As a teacher, I get asked quite frequently, ‘What is the best purchase for a beginner?’

For a beginner, a keyboard with 66 or 72 keys are sufficient for learning to play for the first year or two. In all honesty, you can play most music on a 72-key instrument. For anyone interested in playing classical piano and advancing past the beginner stage, a full 88 keys is recommended. This is true especially if you plan on one day playing a traditional piano.
It is also ideal to make sure the keys are ‘fully weighted.’ Avoid keyboards that are not weighted because the touch is significantly lighter and the student doesn’t build the finger strength to be able to play an actual piano. A keyboard with the ability to have a sustain pedal is also a good idea. The left and middle pedals aren’t necessary as a beginner, but if wanting to progress further it’s not a bad idea to invest in them.

Another option is to look for used pianos in apps like OfferUp, Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. Many times people are giving them away or for very cheap ($100-$200) and then a tuning (approx $120) can be a wonderful start! Just a standard spinet (smallest model of piano) is perfect for a beginner and can fit nicely in a home without having to sacrifice a lot of space. A piano like this can last for many years or until the student wants to really take on the instrument seriously.

As far as brands go, in the beginning phase, I don’t think it makes a huge difference. If making an investment for the future then comparing brands with budget is a must. Also seeing what features make the most sense for the goals of the individual student should come into play.
